Fish and chip shop finalists announced for Taste Of Dorset Awards

The annual Taste of Dorset Awards have been announced and once again look set to celebrate the very best the coastal county has to offer on a plate.

Fish ‘n’ Fritz

Locals in the town of Weymouth will know Fish ‘n’ Fritz as one of the longest established ‘chippies’ in the town. Trading now in its twenty-first year, it’s a mainstay close to the beach. Few locals will not know of the famed pea fritters, and the trophy cabinet is already bursting with many awards stacked up over the years.

Paul Hay is the owner and explained that the sustainability of the fish he serves is more and more important, though also mentioned that it is becoming increasingly difficult to source and that prices are also rising sharply. As a conscious decision, they have reduced their range and opt for more plentiful species, which produce a more interesting menu, like their mackerel baps. They also use recyclable packaging.

Nick The Fish

A relatively new kid on the block, Nick The Fish has been open in Poole for just 18 months. In that short time, he has quickly raced up the TripAdvisor rankings and is ranked #1 in nearly 60 fish and chip shops in Poole, with more ‘excellents’ from voters than any competitor.

Industry publication, Fry’s Magazine, places it in the top 50 fish and chip shops in the country.

Something Else Fishy

The final place is taken by Milborne Port’s Something Else Fishy, last year’s winners. Nicki and Martyn Else own the business and are fishmongers by trade, so visitors can expect something interesting and different. They source fresh fish from Dorset, and further afield in Devon and Cornwall. They also offer homemade and gluten-free desserts.

If these businesses have inspired you to start your own fish and chip shop, do some research and put a plan together, including costings. For example, find out from specialist retailers like Fridge Freezer Direct how much essential shop serve overs will set you back, as that will be crucial to any premises you find.

And if you prefer your fish and chips in a more formal setting, check out the list of the best fish restaurants in the county according to Dorset Magazine.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on 7th November.
